A huge shredder is smashing its way through waste wood in Warwickshire.

When in full-flight the CBI 6400 CT Horizontal wood grinder is an impressive sight as it churns through tonnes of waste wood, turning it into useable recycled material and fuel for biomass boilers.

The Goliath wood grinder, manufactured by specialist company CBI, part of the Terex group, is operating at a wood recycling centre near Coventry for Molson Green customer A&A Recycling and is already busy processing tonnes of waste.

The firm, part of the AW Jenkinson Group, is one of the industry leaders in the wood recycling sector and has had great success in supplying quality products to the panel board and biomass fuel sector.

Now the firm has taken on the 6400 CT wood grinder in a move that has seen it revolutionise production levels thanks to its output and reliability.

The CBI 6400CT Horizontal Grinder is an extreme-duty shredder engineered for resilience and high production when grinding contaminated timber demolition arisings, vegetation, pallets, storm debris, logs, mulch and stumps.

Powered by a CAT C27 782kW engine as standard the 6400CT wood grinder has four rotor options and weighs in at a maximum 47.2tonnes depending on options.

It boasts a working length of 16.2m, width of 3.28m and operational height of 4.65m while during transportation it is 13.33m long, 3.28m wide and 3.65m high.

Matt Howarth is Director of A&A Recycling Services, and has the beast blasting through piles of waste timber to produce biomass and recycled wood chips at its Meridien production centre.

“We bought it because of its capabilities in processing high volumes consistently and dealing with contaminants. It also does what it says on the tin. The wood grinder works at a high pace, delivers a high volume continuously and all while dealing with all the other factors when processing waste wood,” he says

That processing speed is helped by a 1.5m wide, 2.1m high infeed hopper with a 4.5m long conveyor. The wood grinder discharges through a 1.5m wide. 11.2m long and 5m high discharge conveyor. It is a sight to behold when working at full capacity.

“The performance of the CBI wood grinder is exceptional,” says Matt, “Its tonnage output per hour is excellent as are its capabilities when dealing with contamination.”

A problem that any industrial wood grinder has to deal with is that of waste metal accidentally entering the box and potentially causing damage, leading to significant downtime. But the CBI’s Horizontal Grinder features its trademarked Metal Detection System (MDS) which engages within milliseconds whenever the wood grinder’s rotor makes contact with metal. It automatically lowers the engine rpm when waste metal is detected by an electronic sensor, raises the top feed roller and reverses the infeed so that the waste metal can be found and removed by the operator. Its sensitivity can be adjusted depending on the application.

It is a real bonus according to Matt Howarth. “For our business the biggest draw is the CBI 6400CT wood grinder’s up-time. Less time in the garage means more time in operation. More time in operation means more tonnes produced and therefore greater opportunity for our business to grow and develop,” he says.

And for Matt the quality of the CBI 6400CT wood grinder has been more than matched by the aftersales service from the Molson Green team.

“Dealing with Molson Green has been a clean, easy and thorough process. Molson covers every aspect of machinery supply so their service doesn’t stop once they’ve sold you the shredder. Their aftersales performance has been fantastic. They respond to all of our emails and calls promptly and any questions and queries are dealt with quickly. We couldn’t ask for a better service supplier,” he says.
