Breedon have recently added a Finlay J-1480 Jaw Crusher to their fleet from Molson Finlay. This top class machine will increase production of blasted material whilst delivering the high-quality, consistent products that Breedon customers expect.

Breedon’s Investment in Modern Aggregate Production

A well-recognised name in the industry, Breedon is a UK-based construction materials company that supplies aggregates, concrete, asphalt and cement to support building and infrastructure projects across the country. Situated south of Inverness, Breedon’s Daviot quarry has recently invested in a static plant, due to the demand for type 1 aggregate, while keeping its mobile plant to supply the static plant with blasted material down to the 6 – 8 inch size range. Daviot Quarry has a projection of 500,000 tonnes moved this calendar year, which is more than 20% increase from the year before. This was only made possible due to the new systems they have in place from Molson.

Why the Finlay J-1480 Jaw Crusher is the Perfect Fit for Metamorphic Limestone

Breedon have worked with the Terex Finlay range for years, so upgrading to the latest J-1480 jaw crusher was a straightforward decision. Known for its solid build and ability to handle tough materials, the J-1480 jaw crusher is more than capable of dealing with the hard metamorphic limestone found at Daviot Quarry. Alongside it, they also run a J-1175 Hybrid Jaw Crusher, a C-1550+ Cone Crusher, and a TC-80 Conveyor, all playing a part in hitting production targets. Material crushed by the J-1480 jaw crusher heads to the static plant, and once processed, will supply the on-site asphalt plant, the concrete plant in Inverness and Breedon’s customers directly.

High-Volume Performance and Advanced Pre-Screening

With its large 10 m³ hopper, the Finlay J-1480 jaw crusher allows for consistent high-volume loading, helping Breedon process up to 300 tonnes per hour throughout a 10-hour day. Material is then passed through an advanced pre-screen system, which efficiently separates out finer material before it even reaches the jaw. This means only the largest rock makes it to the crushing chamber, helping reduce wear on the jaws. With a 1415mm x 820mm inlet, the J-1480 jaw crusher has no problem delivering excellent reduction ratios at Daviot Quarry, as Mark Keith, Quarry Manager at Daviot, explains: “We’ve had Finlay machines for the last five years because they are the best at handling this material. The fuel efficiency of the J-1480 jaw crusher in these conditions is also a big plus for us”.

Reliability Meets Fuel Efficiency

The Finlay 1480 Jaw Crusher runs a Scania DC13 6-cylinder engine that gives 450 hp at 1,800 rpm, delivering reliability, even in the hardest of crushing environments. This results in better fuel efficiency than other models offering similar output. And when it comes to power output, the Scania engine delivers high torque at low revs, with 1,698 lb-ft at 1,100–1,500 rpm. Scania are known for its reliability in engines, which is a significant factor in Breedon continuing to use the Finlay range. The J-1480 jaw crusher keeps downtimes to a minimum, making it a robust choice for handling tough aggregate materials with low running costs and high productivity.

Superior Product Shape and Adjustable Settings

The Finlay J-1480 jaw crusher offers adjustable closed-side settings of 75 mm to 225 mm to deliver a wide range of product sizes. production goals. And it’s not just about size, as Mark explains: “The end products that we get from the Finlay machines are a much better shape, making them more suitable to our customers’ needs”.

A Strong Partnership with Molson Finlay

After five years of using Finlay machines, Breedon knows they can rely on them.  And with Molson being the only UK supplier, they have the peace of mind knowing that they have the full backup of a team that knows the machines inside out.

“The service we get from Molson is excellent,” says Mark. “And if we do ever need anything with the machines, the service engineers are out by the next day.”

National Parts Support and Technical Expertise

Molson Finley has made significant investments to enhance support for its customers in the quarrying and aggregates sector, with Molson Group holding £16 million worth of parts in stock at service centres strategically placed around the UK. Molson Finlay not only provides genuine Finlay parts to keep the machines running at their optimal performance, but it also provides expert engineers to maintain them, on call whenever they are needed.

Reliability and Performance Where it Counts

In a high-demand operation like Daviot Quarry, having the right kit and the right backup makes all the difference. With big targets ahead and no room for delays, the combination of trusted Finlay machinery and Molson Finlay’s responsive support is a partnership built on reliability, performance and experience where it counts.
