A South Lincolnshire contractor has found a faster, safer\nway to manage woodland with a Sennebogen 718 E tool carrier. Matt Bailey puts\non his lumberjack shirt and heads into the woods to check it out.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Out in the South Lincolnshire countryside something is\nmoving in the hedgerows. Whether it\u2019s unstable, dangerous, diseased Ash trees\nor encroaching growth along roads and railways there is now a more efficient\nway of dealing with the under (and over) growth. Sennebogen\u2019s 718 E harvester\n\u2013available from Molson in the UK \u2013 makes quick work of troublesome trees and\noffers an efficient method of harvesting wood for woodland and roadside\nmanagement with the added bonus that the waste product can be turned to wood\nchip and supplied to biofuel power generation plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Lincolnshire-based KWR Plant Hire has been putting its\n718 E to good use kind of doing the work more often undertaken by teams of tree\nsurgeons. KWR is named after owner\/operator Kevin William Russell who set the\ncompany up more than 20 years ago. It is usually Kevin at the controls of the\n718 E. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOriginally we catered mostly for the construction industry,\u201d\nhe says. \u201cAs the building trade went through difficulties, we evolved and moved\nover to the agricultural and forestry sector. We mostly work with farm estates,\nhighways and the Forestry Commission now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur services focus on providing informed landscape,\nrestoration and environmental management services to restore woodland to its\nnatural growth by removing overgrown regeneration, leaving a healthier woodland\narea, working co-operatively with clients, neighbouring landowners and\nstatutory authorities to achieve the best result. We carry out full and partial\nsite clearances with the removal of trees and management of vegetation on roads,\nmotorways and highways. We also tackle storm damage and Ash dieback,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sennebogen 718 E gives KWR the ability to clear the\nlargest spaces efficiently and effectively utilising attachments like flails,\nmulchers, tree shears and saw grabs. \u201cThis results in a fast, efficient and\nmost importantly safe service,\u201d says Kevin. And it also results in the\nproduction of wood chip, an increasingly valuable commodity used by biomass\npower generation schemes around the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The harvester<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 718 E is a 21 ton wheeled excavator, equipped with a\ntelescopic boom and a range of attachments from specialist forestry attachment\nmanufacturer Vosch including a grab saw attachment, a hedge cutter, a mulcher and\na stump grinder. The machine has a maximum reach of up to 13 m and, thanks to\nits powerful hydraulics, can safely operate the numerous attachments necessary\nfor tree surgery. A load capacity of up to 1.7 tons and\nthe hydraulic grab saw mean that Kevin\u2019s machine can grab, cut, move and stack\ntree sections and branches with astonishing speed, taking down a tree in a\nmatter of minutes that would otherwise take a team of tree surgeons much longer\nto deal with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kevin is at home in the machine\u2019s comfortable Maxcab which\nmakes use of the hydraulics to give a view height of 5.5 m. The cab is also\nequipped with a tilting mechanism to optimize the driver’s view. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Sennebogen really is a complete tool carrier solution,\u201d\nsays Kevin. \u201cIts optimised hydraulics and bigger cooling pack allow higher\nhydraulic flow rates than an excavator of similar weight. This allows me to run\na selection of Vosch attachments including the grab saw, stump grinder, hedge\ncutter and mulcher. And the wheels make it ideal for roadside \u2013 and rail trackside  – operations. I can move much quicker from\ntree to tree compared to a tracked machine.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can expect to see Kevin out and about clearing up after\nany autumnal storms that we may have this year which is good news because the\nSennebogen 718 E is intrinsically safer, quicker and causes less disruption on\nthe roads than the traditional methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe can take a tree down in ten minutes that it would take a\nteam of tree surgeons half a day to tackle,\u201d says Kevin. \u201cAnd I can do it\nwithout the health and safety risks. And if we combine the Sennebogen with a\nchipper on the job we also produce a saleable commodity from the waste.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long reach<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kevin says the main reason he chose the Sennebogen was for\nits long reach, an essential feature when he is having to trim down tall\nhedgerows and trees. \u201cIts long reach and the visibility from the cab were the\nmain things,\u201d he confirms. \u201cThe 718 E opens up whole new markets for us. We\nmainly work along roadsides but I can go to pretty much any farm and they will\nneed their hedges cutting back and I can sell the wood chip at the end of the\njob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have been very impressed with how it has coped with every\njob so far,\u201d adds Kevin. \u201cIt has an awesome cab too.\nI\u2019m used to working in small diggers and this is like a Rolls Royce in\ncomparison!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am really impressed with it. We\u2019re only just starting to use its full potential and we keep finding new jobs that it can tackle all the time \u2013 new potential for income. And it\u2019s so quick. In the time it has taken us to do 12 trees this morning a team of tree surgeons on ropes up in the trees might have managed three.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
