Leading Plant Hire company, Lynch\nPlant Hire Ltd, deliver the first Hybrid excavator to the prestigious HS2\nproject in London. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kobelco SK210HLC-10 Hybrid\nexcavator that Lynch have bought from Molson Group is part of the range of\neco-friendly equipment Lynch have provided to HS2 in the London area to meet\nthe client\u2019s demands to reduce emissions, fuel consumption and the project\u2019s\ncarbon footprint, all without impacting productivity.  The Kobelco Hybrid not only meets these\nrequirements but also improves health and safety thanks to quieter working\nconditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is HS2?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

HS2 is the development of a new\nHigh-Speed rail line linking the South East to the North of England. With an\nestimated cost of \u00a330 billion, it set to become the single largest\ninfrastructure project in Europe. Whist HS2 remains a politically polarizing\nsubject, Government ministers claim that it will create approximately 40,000\njobs and will be available to the first passengers in 2026.  Once complete, it will offer commuters\nsignificantly reduced travel times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project is split into two\nphases; phase one sees the creation of a line from London to Birmingham, with phase\ntwo extending that route from Birmingham to Crewe and the addition of a second\nline from the Midlands to Leeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work on phase one of the\nproject has already begun, with an initial focus on the careful resettlement of\nover 60 archaeological sites spanning more than 10,000 years.  These sites include St. James\u2019s Burial Ground\nin London, the Romano-British Medieval Settlements of Doddershall in Aylesbury and\nan 18th<\/sup> Century Baptist House and Industrial Revolution Burial\nGround in Birmingham.  HS2 has created once\nin a generation an opportunity to reveal, document and share over 10,000 years\nof British history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kobelco Hybrid excavator is a perfect fit.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the project was first put\nto parliament, the environmental impact of HS2 has been high on the agenda.  Right from their initial application for the\nposition of Principle Contractor, the Costain\/Skanska JV have been committed to\nprotecting the environment through the avoidance and prevention of pollution\nand by meeting all compliance obligations.  This approach has been carried through into\nthe JV\u2019s procurement policy and the availability of Hybrid excavators and other\nelectrically driven equipment was an important element of their supplier\nselection process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lynch purchased the Kobelco\nSK210HLC-10 from Molson Group, who fitted a range of after-market safety\nspecification to meet the high safety standards demanded by Costain\/Skanska.  These include a 360-degree camera system,\nhigh-visibility contact points and hand rails, a safe working load indicator as\nwell as a full slew and height limiter systems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lynch Plant Hire\u2019s Head of Key\nAccounts, Chris Gill said; \u201cWe did our homework on the Hybrid excavators\navailable on the market.  Price was\nobviously a factor, but not the be all and end all; it was much more about\ngetting the right machine with the best Hybrid technology that would deliver\nfor our client\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMolson listened to our\nrequirements, understood what we wanted to achieve and then explained the\nKobelco Hybrid system and its benefits.  For\nme the fuel consumption figures and low emissions, without any compromise on\nperformance, were a key part of the decision to go with the Kobelco over its\nrivals\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What sets the SK210HLC-10 apart?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kobelco SK210HLC-10 Hybrid\nexcavator is redefining what a Hybrid excavator can do, thanks to a number of\nunique features that no other Hybrid excavator can boast. It is based on the standard\nKobelco SK210LC-10, which means it comes with a tried and tested base\nunit.  Whilst the complete undercarriage,\nengine and hydraulic systems are identical to the standard SK210, the addition\nof an electric slew, a lithium-ion battery powered generator motor and a smart\ncontrol unit are what makes this model very special indeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithium-Ion battery pack:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kobelco SK210HLC-10 is the\nonly hybrid excavator on the UK market to feature a Lithium-Ion battery back\nthat stores energy recovered by the machine; other Hybrids run a capacitor\nsystem.  Energy is recovered by the\nKobelco during slew braking and when hydraulic oil is returned to the tank\nduring operation of the boom and arm functions.  The ability to generate and store energy\nwithin the machine is a real game changer in comparison with other Hybrid\nmodels on the UK market. The Kobelco\u2019s ability to store and distribute the\npower stored over longer periods of time creates a smoother operating\nexperience and delivers improved fuel consumption figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Electric slew motor\/generator:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most Hybrid excavators feature an\nelectric slew motor, replacing the hydraulically operated slew motor on\nstandard models \u2013 thereby creating a \u201cHybrid\u201d excavator.  The Kobelco SK210HLC-10\u2019s unique feature is\nthe fact that this slew motor also functions as a generator during deceleration\nwhen slewing the machine.  The slew\nmotor\/generator performs a similar function to that seen in Formula 1 cars and\ntheir KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A key benefit when comparing the\nKobelco Hybrid to other hybrids available, is that the slew motor is run\nindependently to the rest of the machine controls. This means that operators\nwill not experience delays when switching between slewing and digging functions<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smart control unit:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kobelco have also developed a\nsmart control unit that is positioned above the Lithium-Ion battery pack.  This unit measures the demands being made on the\nmachine and is capable of delivering 25Kw of power from the battery to the\nengine when the machine is under heavy load.  This boost of power allows the machine to work\nat a lower RPM, saving fuel and reducing engine wear whilst still delivering\nthe power the operators require to complete the task at hand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Molson Sales Manager, Stuart\nButler said; \u201cChris and his team have been, as always, fantastic to work with\non this machine.  Their focus from the\nmoment we first started speaking about the Hybrid has been on their client\u2026\nwhat they needed and which machine would deliver the best value to them.  As soon as we talked about the application, I\nknew that the SK210HLC-10 was a perfect fit as loading wagons makes full use of\nthe Kobelco electric slew motor\/generator feature.  This is proved by the current fuel performance\nof the machine \u2013 running at 5l p\/h it is outperforming the figures quoted to\nChris and his team during the sales process\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
