Like many towns and cities in the UK, Exeter is expanding.\nNew homes are being constructed and to service the increase in population\ngrowth in the locality, space is also being made available to increase\nindustrial expansion. In common with many locations around the country, large\ndistribution warehouses are being built in and around Exeter to supply\nconsumers with their next day deliveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based On the outskirts of the town, Tiverton based John\nLuffman Group are hard at work undertaking the site preparation works for the\nconstruction of a new distribution centre. The Luffman Group offer their client\nbase a wide range of construction, transport and civil engineering services\nthroughout the South West and have done so for over 30 years. \u201cI started out\nwith a JCB 3CX \u201c John explains \u201cEven though my father John was a guarantor on\nthe loan,  he later told me he thought I\nwas mad making the leap into self-employment!\u201d The bug to join the plant\nindustry came from his father, an extremely well-respected person within the\nindustry who was part of the BT Jenkins empire until his retirement. \u201cI had a\nshort spell with the company but wanted to try it for myself.\u201d John explains\n\u201cThe opportunity came along 30 years ago, and I\u2019ve never looked back!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From his humble beginnings with a JCB backhoe loader\nundertaking drainage work on the local motorway and road networks, the company\nhas expanded and flourished into the multi-facetted entity it is today. \u201cI was\ninitially hiring an old 3CX at \u00a3200 per week to undertake the drainage\noperations.\u201d John comments \u201cIt was an old dog! I spoke to the local dealer and\nfound out that I wouldn\u2019t be paying a great deal more if I bought a new one,\neven with the high rates of interest at the time.\u201d The work on the roads led to\nJohn increasing the fleet with further backhoe loaders, wheeled excavators and\na fleet of tipper trucks to carry material to and from projects he was now\nwinning. The increase in work led John to offer a wider range of equipment\nincluding crawler excavators, dozers, dump trucks, crushers and screeners. The\nneed to increase the fleet eventually led John to the door of Bristol based\nMolson Group where a Hitachi ZX200 was subsequently purchased, starting a\nlong-term relationship with the company. Whilst the Hitachi may have been the\nfirst machine purchased from Molson, it certainly wasn\u2019t the last with the\nfleet now dominated by the dealer\u2019s equipment. \u201cWe changed the Hitachi in for a\nKobelco and haven\u2019t looked back since then.\u201d John explains \u201cWhen they took on\nthe Kobelco dealership again in 2014 we were the first company to buy a machine\nfrom them, it\u2019s one we still have in the fleet today, an SK140SRLC-3.\nIt\u2019s done over 6000 hours now and has been exceptionally reliable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company continues to run a number of Kobelco excavators\nin the fleet but the latest addition, also from the Molson stable, has come in\nthe shape of a new Hyundai HX380L. As the fleet is dominated by, and John\nspeaks so highly of, the Japanese brand, why has he chosen their Korean\ncounterpart? \u201cIts what the driver wanted.\u201d John explains \u201cMartin has been with\nus for a number of years, and we gave him a choice.\u201d The 39-tonne excavator is\nnow the flagship of the fleet and has opened up possibilities for John and his\nteam to undertake even larger projects. \u201cMartin and I looked at the possibility\nof taking a Kobelco SK350LC-10, but we felt the larger capacity afforded by the\nHyundai would give us a little more flexibility when it comes to some of our\nlarger cut and fill operations.\u201d John explains \u201cWe could have gone for the\nlarger SK500 but that would have meant an increase in dumper and dozer sizes\ntoo, something we didn\u2019t want to do at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project the company were undertaking consisted of a\nmixed 35,000m3 muck shift split between top soil stripping and storage and a 20,000m3\ncut and fill operation. Aided by a smaller SK210LC-10 excavator, the large\nHyundai was curtailed to final stripping works and spreading of incoming\nmaterial on the day of our visit thanks to a couple of days of heavy rain. \u201cThe\nsoil conditions are very much against us here if we have rain.\u201d John explained\n\u201cIt turns to mush almost immediately and stops us running the trucks. We\u2019ve\nbeen very fortunate that we have been able to get so much work done but that\u2019s\ndown to our team. They are very focussed and productive, and they all know what\nthey have to do to get a job completed. We have a great team, many of whom have\nbeen with us for a number of years. It\u2019s very hard to find good, reliable workers\nthese days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The huge site is adjacent to a Lidl distribution centre and\nJohn remembers the days when he used to undertake farm contracting work on the\nfields. The site on which he is working now was covered in up to 1.1m of top\nsoil in places meaning the removal work left very little in the way of suitable\nmaterial in which to use in the cut and fill operation. \u201cWe believe that when\nnext door was built, they took most of the suitable fill material and replaced\nit with the top soil we now have.\u201d John explained \u201cThis means we have to bring in\nmore fill just to get to the correct levels.\u201d Running both a large tipper fleet\nand a dedicated material recycling and handling centre not too far away has\nhelped John in securing the contract for the supply of the materials into the\nproject. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As is the norm with many modern-day earthmoving companies,\nJohn has invested heavily in GPS technology for his equipment. \u201cWe have tried\nboth Leica and Topcon.\u201d John explains \u201cAnd have standardised on the Topcon\nsystem as it seems to be the best of the rest. It\u2019s very simple and easy to\nuse, the controls are intuitive and more importantly, the drivers find they can\nwork with it easier than anything else. We took the first system on our Komatsu\nD61PX, way before the intelligent machines came about and stuck with it ever\nsince.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new Hyundai has also been equipped with the system,\nsomething driver Martin feels makes the outfit extremely productive. \u201cWe took\nthe option a while ago to get into the GPS side of working.\u201d John explains\n\u201cIt\u2019s made our jobs quicker and more productive as well as being a lot safer.\nWe don\u2019t need to have lads on the ground or waiting for an engineer to come and\nput a batter board back in because its been knocked out for instance. We have\nno excuse for over digging now and when we are on a priced project, that means\nwe don\u2019t move too much or worse still, have to import more material at our\ncost. With a fully GPS\u2019d up site it means the machine drivers are in control of\nwhat they need to do.\u201d The addition of the system to the Hyundai means that any\nlarge cut and fill operations can now be effectively controlled by just two\noperators with Site Engineer Harry on hand to inspect and check as well as\nmonitoring for any changes within the site models, all of which are produced\nin-house by John\u2019s stepson Cheslyn Edwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whilst the previous day\u2019s weather had put paid to any\nserious muck shifting being performed and showing off the Hyundai to its full\npotential, a fleet of 8-wheeled tipper trucks were steadily bringing in\nrecycled material to build the site levels up. With a small section reduced by\nthe Hyundai, it was then time to spread the incoming material. Using one of the\nKomatsu D61PX dozers and the Hyundai, the team quickly spread, levelled and\ncompacted the material in shallow layers. Both machines, aided by their\nrespective Topcon systems worked effectively alongside a hired in 13t roller\npiloted by John\u2019s son David. The large Hyundai doesn\u2019t look out of place on\nfinal trimming works despite its huge size difference with the nearby SK210\nKobelco. \u201cIt copes exceptionally well with anything I have to put it at.\u201d\nMartin explains \u201cShe\u2019s very smooth to operate and I find the cab is laid outvery\nwell.\u201d With a 316hp, 9-litre Cummins engine at the heart of the excavator, the\nmachine is said to be responsive and when called upon, very powerful. \u201cShe will\ndig and load trucks at a good pace if we need too.\u201d Martin exclaimed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the Hyundai representing the latest technology\navailable from Molson, Luffman also have the first Kobelco sold by Molson when\nthey brought the Japanese brand back into the UK. The SK140SRLC dates from 2014\nand is about to be traded in against a new model. \u201cWe have had no issues bar a\nheater matrix on any of the Kobelco excavators.\u201d John said \u201cWe have barely put\na spanner to any of them. If we do have any minor issues, then Molson\u2019s service\nteam are very quick to respond and get us up and running.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keeping the machines on a 5-year cycle allows the company to\nget the best and more from their kit and with the great reliability shown by\nthe existing fleet, the new Hyundai has a lot to live up to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
